Quick Answer

CPM (Cost Per Mille) = the cost to show your ad 1,000 times. Formula: CPM = (Ad Spend ÷ Impressions) × 1,000. Example: $500 spend, 100,000 impressions → $5.00 CPM. Average CPM: Google Display $2–$5, Facebook $7–$11, LinkedIn $30–$45, TikTok $8–$12.

CPM Formula — How to Calculate Cost Per Mille

CPM Formula

CPM = (Total Ad Spend ÷ Total Impressions) × 1,000

Example: $1,500 spend, 300,000 impressions → ($1,500 ÷ 300,000) × 1,000 = $5.00 CPM
Reverse (impressions from budget): $2,000 budget ÷ $8.50 CPM × 1,000 = 235,294 impressions

CPM vs CPC vs CTR — How They Relate

CPM, CPC, and CTR are all connected. Here's the relationship:

The connection between CPM, CTR, and CPC

CPC = CPM ÷ (CTR × 10)
Example: $10 CPM, 1% CTR → CPC = $10 ÷ (1 × 10) = $1.00 CPC

If your CPM is $10 and CTR is 1%, your effective CPC is $1.00. If CTR doubles to 2%, CPC halves to $0.50. Improving CTR directly lowers your effective cost per click on CPM-bought inventory.

When to Use CPM vs CPC Bidding

Use CPM bidding when: Your goal is brand awareness, reach, or frequency. You want to ensure your ad is seen by as many people as possible. You're running a video or visual campaign where views matter more than clicks.

Use CPC bidding when: Your goal is website traffic, lead generation, or direct conversions. You only want to pay when someone shows active interest. You're running search or direct-response campaigns.
